Come join the celebration of the Light Car Club of WA 60th Safari rally on some of the most fun roads in Western Australia.
A little about the first Safari Rally. The first “Safari” was run in 1966 as a Trial, as events were in the 1960’s. The Light Car Club was new and Jeff Dunkerton as the President, wanted to have the Club conduct a Championship event as other Clubs were doing.Roads were ‘not closed’ as they are today and a CAMS directive was that speeds not exceed the mandated local speed limits. Jeff therefore used rough, rugged minor roads and tracks with difficult navigation and tricky grid references to trip the competitors into losing points.With the first Safari, Jeff put in a testing sandy section along The Midland Railway Company’s line to Muchea, on through Julimar forest, then to keep the navigation stalwarts happy, Jeff threw in a section outside Toodyay whereby they had to plot the point of impact of an aircraft crash and proceed to that grid reference from a South Westerly direction.The winner off this first Safari Rally was Malcolm Burnett and Eric Leighton.
